A commission of the Turkish Parliament has agreed to consider a proposal to open the Hagia Sophia up to Muslims for worship and officially recognize it as a mosque. A country that seriously aspires to enter the European Union would not want to open old wounds by converting into a Mosque a building that originally was built to be a Church, a building that for 1000 years was the center of Christianity,

This is more like a power show now... As Andrew said, only reason that the Hagia Sophia is still a museum, is because of the Western pressure and Turkish governments' unnecessary fears, but those fears are gone now, Turkey is heading to a new direction as a regional power, so the point is to give the message of "we are strong" to the community.
